Interesting Facts About Victoria Park
Designed under the guidance of Bhavnagar State Engineer,
Mr. Proctor Sims
Bhavnagar is the only city in Gujarat to have a forest located in the heart of the city. Known as Victoria Park, spread over an estimated 500 acres of land, it is the lungs of the city.
Various species of trees were planted in this park under the supervision of Proctor Sims, Chief Engineer of the State.
The park's opening was celebrated with a 101 Cavalry and court
military exercises.
Designated as Victoria Park in honour of Queen Victoria by Maharaja Takhtsinhji of Bhavnagar.
Pigs were hunted while resting in Victoria Park, Bhavnagar when their population was too high.
A total of 69 species of butterflies belonging to 45 genera and five different families have been observed in the park.
In around 1980 there were herds of chital and other game species such as wild boar, chinkara, blackbuck, nilgai, in the park. Hog deer and red spurfowl have also been introduced and are breeding successfully in the park.
Bhavnagar's Victoria Park was opened on May 24th, 1888. It was named after Queen Alexandria Victoria of England, who ruled India at the time of Maharaja Takhtsinhji's reign.
